Azerbaijan sees sharp decline in methanol exports

In January-April 2026, Azerbaijan exported 34,228 tons of methanol worth $10.607 million.

Report informs, citing the State Customs Committee, that compared with the same period last year, the value of exported methanol decreased 3.4 times and the volume fell 3.6 times.

Methyl alcohol accounted for 0.23% of exports of Azerbaijan-origin main non-oil products. Methanol in primary forms made up 0.09% of the country's total exports.

In January-April 2026, Azerbaijan conducted foreign trade operations worth $17.403 billion. Exports accounted for $11.879 billion of foreign trade turnover, while imports amounted to $5.525 billion. Year-on-year, exports increased by 35.2%, while imports decreased by 32.1%.

Methanol is produced at SOCAR's methanol plant in Baku's Garadagh district. The plant, commissioned in 2013, has been operated since 2016 by SOCAR Methanol LLC, a subsidiary of SOCAR, and became the company's property in August 2017. The enterprise has an annual production capacity of 650,000-700,000 tons of methanol. Natural gas and desalinated water are used as raw materials in production.
