Innovation in the agricultural sector must be both accessible and tailored to local realities, Nasar Hayat, the representative of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Azerbaijan, stated during the third day of Baku Climate Action Week 2025 (BCAW2025), Report informs.
The official said that climate change continues to cause annual crop losses: "Rainfall is erratic, or droughts occur."
Nasar Hayat added that the challenges in this sector are significant: "Agriculture accounts for roughly one-third of global greenhouse gas emissions and uses about 70% of the world's freshwater resources. At the same time, it is the first sector to feel the impacts of climate change. A single drought, flood, or heatwave can destroy up to 40% of planted crops. Behind these numbers are families, communities, individuals-women and children-who suffer."
